Ten persons have been handed two-year jail terms each for producing poultry feed using leather waste treated with toxic chemicals.

They were also fined Tk 24 lakh by a mobile court of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) led by Executive Magistrate Sarwar Alam who conducted a drive in Hazaribagh area of Dhaka last night, the magistrate told The Daily Star this morning.

Law enforcers seized 2,800 tonnes of toxic poultry and fish feed from the spot and later sealed off six factories, he said.

According to experts, the use of tannery waste in poultry and fish feed poses serious health risk for consumers as the consumption of such waste through fish and poultry might cause liver and kidney diseases, even cancer.
