1 crushed under flyover girder in Malibagh

A man died and two others were injured after a girder fell off from a flyover during construction work at Malibagh rail gate area of Dhaka early today.

The deceased was identified as Swapan, 42, a woodcarver from Kishoreganj who was working part-time in the flyover project. The two others were Nur Nabi, a driver, and Palash Baran Dhar, an LGED engineer who was supervising work.

A girder fell off the Malibagh-Moghbazar flyover during construction around 1:30am, Railway Police Station Officer-in-Charge Yasin Faruk said. Train services were halted for three-and-half hours.

Nur Nabir, about 40 years of age and hailing from Noakhali, lost his right leg, according to Jahangir Hossain, his brother who was with the victim at DMCH. Palash lost his right leg from knee down.

Dhaka Medical College Hospital police outpost in-Charge Sub-Inspector Bachchu Mia confirmed the casualty and the injury of two others.

 

Dhaka South mayor visits site, probe panel formed

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sayeed Khokon visited the site and assured full compensation for the victims. He termed the incident unfortunate and unwanted.

A three-member probe committee, led by Abul Kalam Azad, an additional engineer of LGRD was formed to investigate into the incident.

The authorities will bear full cost of treatment for the injured, Khokon said.
