City mayor sued over killing cop, arson in Rajshahi

Two cases filed against around 500 opposition men, 31 arrested

Around 500 leaders and activists of BNP, including Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) Mayor Mosaddek Hossain Bulbul, were sued this morning in two cases filed over arson attacks and murder of policeman in Rajshahi.

Mizanur Rahman Minu, joint general secretary of BNP central unit and also the former RCC mayor, Nadim Mostafa, president of the district unit, and Shafikul Haque Milon, general secretary of the city unit, were also sued among the 77 identified opposition men in the cases filed with Boalia Police Station, said Rafiqul Islam, a sub-inspector of the police station.

One of the cases was filed for obstructing police from discharging their duties and murder while the other for keeping explosives illegally, reports our Rajshahi correspondent quoting the police official.

Constable Siddhartha Chandra Sarkar, 23, succumbed to his injuries around 9:30pm yesterday, one and half hours after he was brought to Dhaka Combined Military Hospital.

Earlier in the day, the constable and eight others sustained injuries as alleged BNP-Jamaat activists hurled a bomb at a police van in Rajshahi city.

Law enforcers detained around 53 people from different parts of the city this morning of which, 31 were shown arrested in the cases.
