Troubled by Good Harvest

Tonnes of potatoes in fields of Munshiganj as farmers cannot store them in cold-storages of the district. About 13 lakh tonnes of potatoes are expected to be produced this season in the district despite inclement weather. The cold-storages of Munshiganj have capacity for only 4.5 lakh tonnes. Some farmers, unable to find room in cold storages, store potatoes in the hull of boats to preserve them and so that they could be shipped to market later on. The authorities had set an aim to grow potatoes on 35,500 hectares of land in the district but farmers grew potatoes on 37,600 hectares. Farmers fear they would have to dump the potatoes or sell them at throw-away prices. The photos were taken in Munshiganj.
