A Dhaka court today granted 83 more days to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to complete investigation into the Major General Abul Manzur murder case.

Judge Khondker Hasan Md Firoz of the Court of First Additional District and Session Judge passed the order after CID Special Superintendent of police Abdul Kahar Akond, also the investigating officer of the case, submitted a petition seeking three months more for further probe.

Later, the court allowed the CID to complete the probe by July 7.

The court also exempted former military dictator and prime accused of the case HM Ershad from personal appearance before the court following a petition filed by Ershad.

In respond to a petition filed by Special Public Prosecutor Asaduzzaman Khan Rochi on February 27, the same court ordered further probe in the case though it was at the final stage of trial.

It also directed the CID to submit a probe report by today (April 22).

Maj Gen Abul Manzur was killed at Chittagong Cantonment on June 1, 1981, just two days into the assassination of the then president Ziaur Rahman.

Manzur, who was the commander of Sector-8 during the Liberation War, was believed to have carried out an abortive Chittagong coup in which Zia was killed.
