A Dhaka court today granted the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) three more months to further investigate the murder of Major General Abul Manzur.

Judge (in-charge) Badrul Alam of the First Additional District and Sessions Judge's Court asked CID to complete the probe by January 8 in response to a petition by the investigating agency.

Investigation Officer Abdul Kahar Akond, also a special superintendent of the CID, submitted the time petition saying that he was yet to communicate with the wife of Gen Manzur, now in USA, for her statement. But he met Lubna Manzur, elder daughter of the slain Manzur, in the USA.

Soon after the court ordered for an additional investigation into the case on February 27 this year, Akond went to USA to meet Manzur's wife but he failed to communicate with her as she was sick.

If the court gives CID more time, he will fly again to America to meet the wife, the CID official said in his petition submitted with the Court of First Additional District and Sessions Judge.

Judge Badrul Alam is expected to pass an order on the issue later in the day.

Manzur, a sector commander of the Liberation War, was killed at Chittagong Cantonment on June 1, 1981, just two days into the assassination of the then president Ziaur Rahman.

Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad, the prime accused in the case, was not present at the court as he was earlier exempted from personal appearance before the court. His lawyer Sheikh Mohammad Sirajul Islam represented him today.

The other two accused Maj (retd) Kazi Emdadul Haque and Lt Col (retd) Mostafa Kamaluddin Bhuiyan were present at the court.
