Chased by cops, man drowns in city pond

A man drowned in a pond during his bid to escape arrest by police in the capital's Mirpur this morning.

Abdul Khaleque, 38, was a cook by profession and resident of Swapna Slum in Section-6 of Mirpur.

Locals said the incident occurred around 11:00am when Desco officials went to the slum to disconnect illegal electricity lines with the help of police.

Police chased the sum dwellers and charged batons when they protested the drive.

Being chased by the law enforcers, many of the protestors jumped into a nearby pond.

Khaleque drowned while others managed to swim ashore.

Later, fire fighters recovered his body from the pond around 3:00pm.
