Police detained 23 people early today after a case was filed in connection with the killing of Ekramul Haque, chairman of Phulgazi upazila in Feni.

The law enforcers also seized a private car and two motorbikes suspecting those were used during the arson attack that left the chairman dead.

Ekramul, also president of the upazila Awami League, was shot and then burned alive in his car by unidentified assailants in broad daylight in Feni town yesterday.

The victim’s elder brother Rezaul Haque Jasim filed the case with the Feni Model Police Station about 1:00am today against BNP leader Mahtab Uddin Chowdhury and 34 unknown persons, said Mahbub Morshed, officer-in-charge of the police station.

Mahtab Uddin, a BNP-backed chairman candidate who was lost to Ekramul in the recent upazila election, has been made prime accused in the case, the OC said.

Followers of Ekramul vandalised the house of Mahtab Uddin at Anandapur village yesterday after the murder.

Soon after the case was filed, police started massive raids at different parts of the districts and detained 23 people for their alleged involvement with the killing, the OC added.

A private car and two motorbikes were recovered in an abandoned condition from Birinchi area in Feni poura area. Police suspected that the miscreants carried out the killing mission using these vehicles, OC Mahbub said.

Meanwhile, Ekramul’s first namaz-e-janaza was held at Mizan Moidan in the town around 9:00am while the second at the Phulgazi Pilot High School ground which was attended by Communications Minister Obaidul Quader.

Local lawmaker and AL district unit general secretary Nizam Uddin Hazari, lawmaker Shirin Sultana and a good number of people took part in the janazas.

Ekramuk Haque will be buried at his family graveyard after the last janaza at his Banduya Daulatpur village of the upazila.
