Canadian Int'l School gets space science centre

Canadian International School (CIS) in Dhaka launched a space science centre with a powerful telescope on its premises Monday to encourage young learners in science education.
The centre has been set up in association with Bangladesh Astronomical Association.
It will primarily have a classroom planetarium with the telescope procured from Singapore for sighting of the moon, stars and other celestial bodies, and different kinds of books and journals on astronomy, said Khondoker Hafiz, chief executive of CIS.
The centre will remain active in astronomical observation programmes throughout the year, he said, adding that the general public would have access to the facility on special occasions.
Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, Canadian High Commissioner Heather Cruden said science was making change everywhere in life—at homes, factories, and offices.
“Science fictions are turning into science facts,” she said.
The aim of the space centre is to inspire tomorrow's scientists, engineers, and doctors, said Debra Parker, liaison officer at the Manitoba Education Ministry of Canada, curriculum of which is followed at CIS in Bangladesh.
The centre will help create a general interest in science education, said Masud Rahman, president of the Canada Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
CIS Chairman Mohamed Kamaluddin and lawmaker Golam Dastagir Gazi were also present.
