Walton Primo X4 Pro

First impressions

We didn't get the box with the device. We do not know what is inside. Could it have contained a magic genie? We don't know. But we do have the device which you as a user will be handling day after day.

The design is tried and tested to be the go-to style for mobile phone manufacturers. The glass is curved slightly along the edges. The same curves are mirrored on the metal back. The unit we got is the champagne gold.

The logo on the back is not a fingerprint scanner as it may initially appear. It is slightly indented and does nothing other than contain Walton's new simplified and improved logo. Scanner is located on the front and it works instantaneously.

Display

5.5 inch super AMOLED Full HD display. It has a relatively narrow bezel and provides extreme viewing angles. The glass is scratch resistant Gorilla Glass 4. Yes, i unknowingly carried it around with keys in my pocket. The glass claims are true, the back not so much.

Under the hood

The GPU is a Mali-T860 working with an octa-core, 2.0 GHz (64 Bit, ARM Cortex-A53) processor. 4GB RAM rounds up the excellent specs list. You also get 64 GB of storage space. Games like CSR Racing ran lag free but the cut scenes looked a little choppy. Ccould be just an attribute of the game itself as game play never stuttered.

Battery

Comes with a non removable 5000mAh Li-Po battery. We got nearly full two days usage out of it. Quick charge allows a full charge in less than two hours.

Camera

The main unit is 16MP f2.0 aperture with manual focus, shutter speed and ISO controls. Phase detection autofocus helps lock on quicker and better than previous units. You can manually touch to focus. Even without doing that, you can aim and press the shutter with the AF taking about a second to lock onto objects near the centre and shoot. Shooting is faster when lighting is good. And I'm pleasantly surprised that it mostly takes clear, defined pictures.

Special features include GIFs, time lapse and a burst mode with a silly name: Take Anytime.

The front camera is a 13MP f2.2 aperture unit. The megapixels do not bring in what you need. Photos are quick to snap but there is a lot of smoothening going on. Which is

great if you have slightly less than perfect skin and want to automatically remove all blemishes.

Other tweaks

Built-in IR unit makes sure you can run all your IR enabled devices using the phone. Setup is quick as I tried on my TV ad AC. Although you do have to point directly towards the TV unit. Things sitting in front like a toy car or a plate of food can create interference.

Also, you get a split screen option allowing viewing of two apps simultaneously.

VERDICT

This is a Walton. And they have created a phone that works very smoothly and is full of the right kind of specs. The most impressive feature is the massive battery letting you easily coast through a day and into the next. The screen is what you expect of HD AMOLED sharp, bright, colourful. It does take good pictures. So what's missing? Not much really. Most other bigger brands sell similar specs for a higher price. So it may be good value for money. But it is a Walton, a brand that is not yet affiliated with expensive mid range phones. At this price point, we want to see how well it is received. It's a start on their way to offering fancy mid-rangers.
