Maruti Suzuki India has unveiled the first sketch of the new Dzire, which will make its global debut in May this year.

The country's top automaker yesterday confirmed introduction of the 2017 DZire even before the updated hatchback Swift will make its way to India, reports Hindustan Times.

"The new DZire is designed to leave a lasting impression with its rich sculpted side body and enhanced proportions. The unmistakable sedan proportions with low and wide stance lends an elegant road presence to the new DZire," the company said in statement, the daily reported.

The new DZire will be heavily updated in terms of design, features and technology to meet with the latest competition in town such as Tata Tigor and new Hyundai Xcent.

From some of the images leaked online, looks like the new DZire will get the face of the 2017 Swift that was showcased at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

Under the hood, the DZire will most likely remain the same, with the proven and very successful 1.2-litre K-series petrol and a 1.3-litre DDiS diesel engines doing the duties. The engines will be mated to either a five-speed manual or an automatic manual transmission gearbox, what is on offer at present, reports the Hindustan Times.

The DZire has led the sub-four-metre segment since it was introduced in 2012, selling 1,67,266 units in the financial year 2016-17, down by 15% from 1,95,939 units sold in the previous fiscal.

The new hatchback Swift is also expected to hit the market by the start of 2018.
