Mobile internet users now 6 crore

The number of active mobile internet connections in the country crossed six crore landmark, according to a Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) report published today.

The telecom regulator said that internet connections through mobile operators were 6.04 crore out of the total of 6.39 crore internet connections at the end of July 2016.

Mobile internet accounts are 94.45 percent of the total active connections, BTRC report also reads. In July, active mobile internet connections increased by 3.79 lakh.

Earlier in August last year, the industry observed five crore mobile internet connections signpost and it also reached the landmark of 4 crore in September 2014.

Of the total connections, fixed internet connections stood 37.70 lakh and WiMAX was 1.08 lakh, which is continuously declining, according to BTRC's July report.

The report also said at the end of July total active mobile SIM's connections declined by 1.90 percent to 12.89 crore from 13.14 crore.

Industry sources said the impact of biometric SIM re-registration on the industry got reflected after two months due to operators' deactivation calculation process.

If any SIM does not remain active for 90 days, only then it is counted as an inactive connection.
