How the telecom industry is evolving in Bangladesh

It has been nearly a year or two since we are seeing a sudden shift in the telecom industry of Bangladesh. The top telecos are now evolving their business model. As data is on the rise and voice based revenue showing a steady decline, we are seeing the telecom operators to expanding to new territories. Starting with Grameenphone, the leading telco, has launched several products in the market. A few of its ventures include: GPay, Wowbox, Comoyo, Ki Dorkar, GP Music, Bioscope etc. GP also has an accelerator program through which it is actually grooming up and coming startups. They are also taking a sit on the board of the graduating in the startups. Whiteboard, another initiative of GP, is also playing a role in building the eco-system. Ki dorkar is an e-commerce of GP that's selling products to customers and that's beside GP's own handset business.

Robi and Banglalink aren't lagging far behind either in this race. Banglalink's online video streaming site Banglaflix is being widely used amongst Banglalink users. Robi on the other hand has been doing pretty good with their Yonder Music service (which is a separate entity by Axiata). Robi, too has recently launched an e-shop to sell out device directly to the customers.

Are these teleco's in anyway threatening the local e-commerce seen or are they boosting the competition? Coming soon on BYTES.
