DCL L30

What is it?

DCL which is short for Daffodil Computers Limited is another newcomer in the smartphone game. DCL has been in computer electronics & hardware business for a while but now they have entered this segment of the market with an array of devices. Today we would be talking about L30, the top of the line product of DCL currently being retailed at Tk. 17,990/-.

Display

The phone has a 5.5 inch FHD display with 2.5D curved glass. Honestly we weren't exactly wowed by it since this is pretty much standard in most 13K+ taka devices these days. The display was crisp and the high res images were a bit pixilated. Best part of the display was the brightness- even at the highest it wasn't that would dazzle you; which we loved.

Under the hood

This phone sits at the bottom of the midrange line up. DCL has tried to pack in a punch in terms of hardware with the MT6753 Mediatek chipset. We aren't exactly complaining about this pre-2015 processor; all we think is it could have been better. But truth be told, you won't feel lag most of the time. The only time you might experience a bit lag is when you are juggling way too much RAM hogging apps.

Battery

Whatever L30 lacks in aesthetics, it makes up in the battery. After all it comes loaded with a whopping 6,000mAh battery. Yes, you read right. Many of us probably carry a powerbank with that much juice. This phone has been my secondary phone for at least a week now and it last nearly three days in low usage and two working days in moderate use.

Camera

The cameras of the phone aren't its best selling point though. The rear camera comes with a run of the mill 13 MP camera. It took sharp photos alright but we weren't that impressed. Moving shots came blurry. The front camera produced middling selfies.

What's in the box?

DCL L30 comes with a lot of stuff. You have the regulars i.e. USB cable, USB charging plug, screen-protector, transparent soft cover for the phone. It has two more things that you generally don't get most of the phones these days. Firstly, it's the OTG cable (which isn't that rare but used to come with more devices couple years back) and secondly a VR headset. Yes, a full-fledged VR headset. The best part of this particular VR headset is you not necessary need this phone to see any VR clips. All you need is a 5 inch plus phone and voila! You are now ready to rumble!

VERDICT

This is the very first flagship by DCL. The intention was pretty clear- to bring a device that's practical as well as budget-friendly.  The phone, to some extent, actually does that. You get a smooth device with almost the right kind of specs. The key-selling feature of the phone is the colossal battery which lets you easily coast through two days and into the next. So what's the part it didn't get right? In our observation, two things. Firstly, the price-tag. Within this budget range one can get much market-proven devices like Helio S10 or even the Huawei GR3 2017. Secondly, DCL needs to focus on the camera as well as the device build quality. Or else its going to have a hard time surviving in this brutal market.
