World Bank President Kim visits bKash

World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim meets with bKash Chairman Shameran Abed, CEO Kamal Quadir and other officials of the mobile money company, during the former's visit to the head office of bKash in Dhaka on Monday.

World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim visited the head office of bKash in Dhaka on Monday.

Kim was briefed about how bKash has been contributing to digitalising Bangladesh economy and impacting the development of the country at the grassroots level, the mobile money company said in a statement.

Kim was accompanied by World Bank’s Chief Economist and Senior Vice President Paul M Romer and Vice President for South Asia Annette Dixon, according to the statement.

World Bank Country Director for Bangladesh Qimiao Fan, Regional Director for South Asia at IFC Mengistu Alemayehu and IFC Country Manager Wendy Werner were also present.

bKash Chairman Shameran Abed, Chief External and Corporate Affairs Officer Sheikh Md Monirul Islam and Company Secretary and Chief Financial Officer Moinuddin Mohammed Rahgir also attended the event.

At the meeting, bKash CEO Kamal Quadir shed light on how bKash evolved over the last six years.

He praised the favourable policy of the government and Bangladesh Bank’s pragmatic guidelines that enabled bKash to reach millions of unbanked people in the country.

The World Bank president praised bKash for its overwhelming success in the financial inclusion of the marginalised people of the country.

He expressed his ideas of bKash partnering with global technology providers for opening worldwide transaction opportunities to further enhance the inclusive agenda.

The four shareholders of bKash are: IFC, a member of the World Bank Group; BRAC Bank, Money in Motion LLC and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
