Speakers tell memorial meeting
Samson H Chowdhury, the founder of Square Group, reached the pinnacle of success through his devotion to work while his love for society and exemplary contributions show he never forgot his roots, speakers told a memorial meeting.
With his death, Pabna's people lost their guardian while the country a brilliant entrepreneur and an asset, they told the meeting on his life and works organised at Pabna Press Club on Friday to mark his sixth death anniversary.
Samson passed away in Singapore on January 5, 2012 at the age of 86 due to old-age complications. Special prayers were also held attended by his family members. He started his business venture on a small scale from a village in Pabna over 60 years ago, which now covers 40 countries, they said, recalling him being a visionary entrepreneur promoting ethical standards in business. Samson left behind an unmatched legacy of entrepreneurship and industrialisation, they said.
He built one of the largest conglomerates in Bangladesh from scratch and set an example of ethical business that is certain to inspire many others, the participants said. He was honoured as the Best Entrepreneur of the Country for the Year 2000-2001 by The Daily Star and DHL. The American Chamber in Bangladesh honoured him as Business Executive of the Year in 1998. He was the founder president of the Bangladesh Association of Publicly Listed Companies, vice-president of International Chamber of Commerce, Bangladesh and chairman of Central Depository Bangladesh Ltd.
Pabna Press Club President Prof Shibojit Nag chaired the discussion where veteran journalist and columnist Ranesh Maitra, Pabna Zila Parishad Chairman Rejaur Rahim Lal, freedom fighter Baby Islam, Pabna Bar Association President Shah Alam and Square Pharma Deputy General Manager Mizanur Rahman spoke.
