Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) today said radiation emitted by mobile phone towers is well below the World Health Organization's (WHO) permissible limit and is not harmful to human health or the environment.

The commission surveyed telecom tower sites in six divisional headquarters and found no harmful radiation at any of the sites.

"The permissible amount of radiation exposure from mobile network tower is below both international and BTRC standards. So, there is no reason to worry," Md Shahidul Alam, director general of spectrum management at BTRC, said during a discussion meeting titled "Tower radiation measurement and recent survey".

The survey to determine mobile tower radiation will continue in future, BTRC Commissioner Aminul Hasan added.

Radiation is emitted from everywhere and from all forms of technology and there will be no communication or power if everyone wants a radiation-free situation, he opined.

The commissioner also criticised "completely baseless rumours" on this matter and said a report on this will be filed with the High Court soon, as per its earlier order.
