The power tariff hike is marginal and it will barely have any effect on the people’s daily life, prime minister’s energy adviser Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury said today.

He said that the decision was taken independently by the commission and it does not have anything to do with the government, Bangla daily Prothom Alo reports.

Chowdhury was speaking to journalists on the recent tariff hike placed by Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) after a programme at Bidyut Bhaban.

On average, the commission hiked the tariff on retail supply by 5.3 percent or Tk 0.35 per unit.

At the same programme, State Minister for Power and Energy Nasrul Hamid remarked that the tariff has not been hiked much, the report said.

The ruling Awami League government has raised the power tariff for eight times in its two regimes.
