Operators launch voice mail services

The telecom regulator yesterday introduced voice mail services for the convenience of mobile phone users in the country.

Prime Minister's ICT Affairs Adviser Sajeeb Wazed Joy inaugurated the service by sending a greeting message to Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission's Chairman Shahjahan Mahmood at a ceremony at the BTRC office.

In his message, Joy congratulated BTRC for introducing the service in Bangladesh.

State Minister for Telecom Tarana Halim also sent a message, hoping users would be benefitted from this service launched by Robi, Teletalk and Banglalink.

Mahmood urged the other operators to introduce the service as well.

Voicemail allows customers to leave a voice message when the user is on another call, does not answer or when their phone is switched off. Subscribers can listen to the recorded message at a later time.

Mahmood said, “Not only VMS, we are focusing on all the services to ensure quality and customer satisfaction.”

In November last year, the regulator had directed the operators to introduce the service within three months, even though the operators were reluctant and termed it obsolete.

Robi Managing Director and Chief Executive Mahtab Uddin Ahmed said regular call charges would be applicable for the voice mail service now.

“We would introduce packages later,” he said, mentioning that 12 lakh customers are currently using the existing VMS in their network.

BTRC Vice Chairman Ahsan Habib Khan, commissioners and high officials were also present. BTRC Secretary Sarwar Alam moderated the programme.
