Smokes from acid container create panic at Ctg port

Smoke from an old container at Chattogram Port caused panic among the workers at the port jetty.

The incident took place around 12noon at yard number 7 of the port.

On information, the port authorities rushed to the spot and moved the container to a safer place.

Port officials said the container contains acid-like substances. It has been lying in the port jetty since 2012, they said.

Later, the container was handed over to the customs authorities for disposal.

Omar Farooq, secretary of the Chittagong Port Authority, told The Daily Star that it was not a case of fire.

"Around 12noon, a worker in yard number 7 of the port reported that he had seen smoke from the old container and we quickly moved the container to a safer place," he said.
