Robi posts Tk 183 crore in profits

Mobile phone operator Robi's profit rose 1.3 per cent year-on-year to Tk 183 crore in 2022.

The country's second biggest telecom service provider also recommended 7 per cent cash dividend for its shareholders.

However, the company's chief corporate and regulatory officer, Mohammed Shahedul Alam, said Robi could have made a profit of Tk 361 crore instead of Tk 183 crore.

The gradual fall of Bangladeshi taka against the US dollar wiped out half of Robi's profit after tax (PAT) in 2022, he said.

Despite the loss caused by the depreciation of the local currency, the telecom operator's revenue rose by 5.5 per cent year-on-year to Tk 8,586 crore last year.

In the fourth quarter of 2022, Robi contributed 60.5 per cent of its revenue and around 56 per cent of the whole last year to the government exchequer.

The company, which runs its operation under the brand names of Robi and Airtel, added 8 lakh customers in a year until December last year.

The mobile phone operator now has 5.44 crore subscribers.
