Income inequality in Bangladesh keeps deepening

Income inequality in Bangladesh has deepened in the past six years, according to data from the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS).

The Gini Coefficient related to income rose to 0.499 in 2022, up from 0.482 in 2016 and 0.458 in 2010, according to the "Household Income and Expenditure Survey -2022".

The BBS published the "Household Income and Expenditure Survey -2022" today.

The Gini index measures the extent to which the distribution of income or consumption among individuals or households within an economy deviates from a perfectly equal distribution. A Gini index of 0 represents perfect equality, while an index of 1 implies perfect inequality.

Consumption-related Gini Co-efficient was 0.334 last year, an increase from 0.324 in 2016 and 0.321 in 2010, said the national statistical agency.
