Grameenphone users face network outage

It lasted for over half an hour after 6pm today

Mobile phone users in different parts of the country complained about not getting access to Grameenphone's network today for over half an hour.

Social media platform Facebook was flooded with complaints of the users that they are failing to make calls through Grameenphone connections after 6pm.

Md Shoyeb, an employee of a private company in Dhaka's Firmgate, said two Grameenphone SIMs of his mobile phone were showing cross signs for about half an hour.

"I could not make any call in that time period."

A Grameenphone official, wishing anonymity, said a technical glitch caused the network outage.

"Our engineers have restored the network," he told this correspondent at around 6.40pm.

However, he could not say anything about the origin of the glitch that caused the outage.

This is the second time this year such an outage was experienced in the country's top operator that has over eight crore customers.

On February 23, Grameenphone customers from different parts of Bangladesh said they were unable to call other GP numbers.

That time, a GP official told The Daily Star that the disruption took place because of damages to fibre-optic cables at 'three different locations' in the northern regions of the country.

That time the GP network outage lasted for around 2 hours.
