Good farm management practices will reduce the production cost of poultry farms and increase economic benefits to small-scale farmers including the women and youth, according to findings of a study.

The findings of the study were shared at a workshop styled "Lesson learnt and way forward workshop" held at Pan Pacific Sonargaon, Dhaka today.

The Consumer Association of Bangladesh (CAB), Beezbister Foundation (BBF), and Bangladesh Centre for Advanced Studies (BCAS) jointly conducted the study titled "Food safety governance in poultry sectors: outcome, challenges and way forward" in association with British Council.

"Earlier, the farmers would need 1,700 gram poultry feed to produce one kg poultry while now it needs 1,500 gram after adopting the good farm management practices," said Md Rajaul Karim, project coordinator of the study.

Karim said around Tk 10 could have been saved during production of one kilogramme of poultry because of adopting good farm management practices.

Besides, now the farmers have to spend Tk 1,000 for antibiotics against 1,000 chicken while earlier they would spend Tk 3,000 for this purpose.

Shaikh Azizur Rahman, director general of the Department of Livestock Services (DLS), said the unnecessary use of antibiotics to the poultry farm is unexpected, which is harmful to chicken and human health.

He said DLS is dedicated to help the farmers of the poultry sector to increase protein production.

According to him, the availability of protein in the daily menu would ensure meritorious next generation.
