‘Bangladesh should implement national pathway commitments’

Bangladesh should implement the national pathway commitments immediately with the collaboration of the science and policy community, speakers said at a webinar recently organised by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Bangladesh.

Saying that food could be a powerful tool to fulfil the commitments, they emphasised the need to draft a plan of action for implementing the commitments to ease the formulation and implementation of the food and nutrition-sensitive programme.

Director of Centre for Development Research of Germany's Bonn University Prof Joachim von Barun placed the keynote speech titled "The UN Food Systems Summit- the Action Agenda and the Role of Science".

Appreciating Bangladesh for offering to lead the coalition for the climate-resilient development pathway, he said, "Establishing a climate-resilient food system for Bangladesh in a participatory approach is important."

He stressed the importance of integration of multi-sector agencies such as agriculture productivity, mechanisation in agriculture, diversified farming, knowledge-intensive cropping system, extension and training, and continued dialogues with the stakeholders including farmers and civil societies.

UN Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh Mia Sappo expressed the UN's commitment to supporting the Bangladesh government in the implementation of the national pathway commitments to ensure a resilient and sustainable food system for all.

Director General of the Food Planning and Monitoring Unit of food ministry Md Shahiduzzaman Faruki, Additional Secretary of Ministry of Agriculture Ruhul Amin Talukder, Additional Secretary Ministry of Food Salma Momtaz were present among others.

Md Mozibor Rahman, additional secretary of the food ministry chaired the programme.
