India, Myanmar discuss border security issues

India's Defence Secretary Giridhar Aramane met Myanmar's senior leadership, including the defence minister, and discussed a number of issues including maintenance of tranquillity in border areas, illegal trans-border movement, drug trafficking, and smuggling.

During Aramane's official visit to Myanmar from June 30 to July 1, "both sides reaffirmed their commitment that their respective territories would not be allowed to be used for any activities inimical to the other," said an Indian Defence Ministry statement issued today.

Aramane called on Myanmar Army chief General Min Aung Hlaing in Naypyidaw, Defence Minister Gen (retd) Mya Tun Oo, and held meetings with Myanmar Navy Commander-in-Chief Admiral Moe Aung and Chief of Defence Industries Lt Gen Khan Myint Than.

The visit provided an opportunity to raise matters relating to India's security with the senior leadership of Myanmar, reports our New Delhi correspondent.

India shares an approximately 1,700km long border with Myanmar.

Any developments in Myanmar have a direct impact on India's border regions, the defence ministry said, adding "peace and stability in that country and well-being of its people, therefore, remain of utmost importance to India."
