Bangladesh exported 23 tonnes of hilsa fish to India through Benapole land port today on the occasion of Durga Puja.

Five trucks carrying the 23 tonnes of hilsa reached the Benapole port around 3:30pm, reports our Benapole correspondent.

Md Ishtadul Haque, quality control officer of Benapole Fisheries Office, told our correspondent the export of hilsa to India started from today.

A total of 2,080 tonnes of hilsa will be delivered to India by October 10 as per the previous decision of the government.

Benapole Customs Commissioner Md Azizur Rahman said all filed level officials have been asked to expedite the activities of hilsa export.

On September 20, the commerce ministry gave the go-ahead to 52 companies to export 2,080 tonnes of hilsa fish to India by October 10 this year, as the Indian government wanted to export the fish from Bangladesh ahead of Durga Puja.

The demand for hilsa fish is very high among people of Bangladesh and India's West Bengal for its flavour. As such, every year the Indian government urges Bangladesh to send hilsa fish to India ahead of Puja.
