About four crore people in the country have capacity to pay tax but majority of them do not pay tax on their income, said National Board of Revenue (NBR) chairman today.

"We are trying to bring them under tax net," said Md Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan, chairman of NBR, at a press conference at NBR headquarters in Dhaka.

At present, NBR have about 40 lakh registered taxpayers but 22 lakh submitted returns in the fiscal 2018-19.

It has collected Tk 28 crore from the taxpayers through assessment of their incomes.

To increase tax, the NBR has been carrying out survey, involving taxmen and university students, for the last several months.

So far, the survey teams have detected 3,31,272 taxpayers and registered them.

Mosharraf said NBR has formed 213 survey teams to bring additional 6.72 lakh under tax net.

We are also taking punitive measures against registered taxpayers who have not submitted tax returns, he said.
