Court stays removal of NRBC Bank's MD

Dewan Mujibur Rahman

The High Court yesterday stayed the Bangladesh Bank's decision to remove NRB Commercial Bank's Managing Director Dewan Mujibur Rahman.

The court also issued a rule asking the BB and the government to explain why the central bank's decision to remove Rahman should not be declared illegal.

BB on Wednesday removed Rahman from the bank for his alleged involvement in a number of loan scandals involving around Tk 700 crore.

The bench of Justice Syed Muhammad Dastagir Husain and Justice Md Ataur Rahman Khan came up with the stay order and the rule following a writ petition filed by Rahman challenging the legality of the central bank's decision.

Advocate Hamida Chowdhury, a lawyer for the petitioner, told The Daily Star that the central bank has removed her client on an allegation without issuing a show cause notice to him.

Barrister Rokanuddin Mahmud appeared for the writ petitioner. Deputy Attorney General Amit Talukder represented the state.

When contacted, a BB official told The Daily Star yesterday that they are yet to receive the court order.
