31 vehicles detained for breaking tax rules

Tax officials detained 31 trucks and covered vans in a week as the vehicles were carrying goods that had no VAT-related papers.

“Nothing except the rent receipts for the vehicles could be found during the drive,” according to a statement of the VAT Intelligence, a directorate under the National Board of Revenue.

But as per rules, value added tax receipts and other relevant documents should have been with the consignments, the directorate said.

The detention was the result of patrols by VAT officials at various points in the city.

The directorate said it detained the vehicles, now in the custody of the revenue authority, between April 22 and April 29.

“It seems that the owners and employees of some businesses do not care about complying with VAT and tax rules in the transportation of goods,” according to the statement.

The directorate said it has strengthened efforts to curb VAT evasion and asked all businesses to keep VAT receipts along with the deliveries from factories.
