BSMMU dental faculty dean assaulted by docs

Medical services at the dental faculty of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) remain suspended since this morning after a section of medical officers assaulted the faculty dean.

Patients of the other faculties were also deprived of proper treatment for an hour following the incident.

Around 11:30am, a group of medical officers loyal to BSMMU Vice Chancellor Pran Gopal Datta swooped on the room of Dr Ali Asgar Morol, dean of dental faculty.

They vandalised laptop, medical instruments and furniture of the room and also assaulted Dr Morol physically, BSMMU Proctor Prof ASM Zakaria told The Daily Star.

At one stage, doctors of dental faculty chased the attackers and drove them out of the campus, the proctor said.

Panicked patients started running to and fro during the attack, which halted the medical services.

Dr Morol is the follower of Dr M Iqbal Arslan secretary general of Pro-Awami League Swadhinata Chikitsak Parishad (Swachip).

Tension was running high between the VC and Swachip secretary general following formation of a committee for doctors’ hostels of the BSMMU.

The Swachip-backed doctors have been dominating the committee that formed yesterday.

After the attack on the dean, doctors of dental faculty brought out a procession demanding arrest of the attackers in 72 hours.

They also demanded expulsion of those responsible for the attack.
