Bridge lies unused due to lack of approach road

A 72-metre concrete bridge across Kodomtola canal at Aminpur village in Bera upazila under the district has remained unused for over a year due to lack of approach road.
Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) completed construction of the bridge at a cost of Tk 3.53 crore on March 14 last year.
But the locals cannot use it as there is no approach road, said Md Bablu Fakir, a resident of Aminpur village.
Visiting the area on Saturday, this correspondent saw people walking past the bridge on the dried up canal.  
During this correspondent's visit to the area on Saturday, several locals seeking anonymity said the bridge at the place was not that much necessary but it was constructed as nearby Charpara village is the home of a high official.  
“The government fund has been spent for building the bridge that makes link between Charpara and Aminpur through a less important internal village road although there are no bridges at many important places in Bera upazila,” said Mirza Hassan Shahid, a government official, also the resident of Aminpur.
Md Abdul Kuddus, assistant engineer of LGED, Bera office, said the bridge was constructed to develop internal communication between Mashumdia and Rooppur unions under the upazila.
Asked how the people will use the bridge without any approach road, he said a 150-metre approach road will be constructed for the purpose.
