Brahmanbaria mayhem: district Hefajat leader, 9 others arrested

Police have arrested 10 activists of Hefajat-e-Islam including its Brahmanbaria district unit's assistant publicity affairs secretary Mufti Maulana Zakaria Khan in connection with the mayhem in the district from March 26 to 28.

Zakaria Khan was arrested at midnight on Sunday in front of Abdul Quddus Markhan Poura Muktamancho in the town, according to a press release sent by Special Branch of Brahmanbaria police today.

The nine others were arrested in the last 24 hours till this morning, our local correspondent reports.

The release said, Zakaria Khan, during interrogation, confessed that the violence was conducted in compliance with the instruction of Hefajat's central leaders as part of a plan to oust the ruling government.

During the violence on March 26-28, the teachers and students of different madrasas vandalised and torched different government and non-government establishments and houses in the district as per the directives of Zakaria Khan and his senior leaders, the release added.

So far 369 people were arrested in connection with 56 cases over the mayhem till Monday, said Md Roish Uddin, additional superintendent of police in Brahmanbaria.
