Books burnt in Munshiganj petrol bomb attack
Pickets allegedly hurled petrol bombs on a book-laden truck in Gazaria upazila of Munshiganj this morning on the second day of the BNP-led 20-party alliance nationwide hartal (shutdown).
Around five to 10 percent books loaded on the truck were damaged in the arson attack, reports our Munshiganj correspondent.
The Laximpur-bound truck came under the attack in Jamaldi Bus Stand area around 7:30am, said Bijoy Talukdar, superintendent of police in Munshiganj.
Trucker Harunu-ur-Rashid suffered minor injuries when he jumped off the vehicle after the arson attack.
Meanwhile, a stationed bus was set on fire near Old Ferry Ghat at Mawa of the district sometime after midnight, said Tofazzal Hossain, officer-in-charge of Louhajang Police Station. None was hurt in the incident.
Apart from Munshiganj, no major incident was reported from anywhere across the country till noon when the report was filed.
The alliance is observing the 72-hour strike from 6:00am yesterday protesting against the alleged killings, tortures and arrests of alliance activists.
Vehicular movement remains normal like other days in Dhaka. A good number of private car owners have dared to come out to the city roads defying today’s hartal.
Commuters are waiting for buses to go to their offices and other destinations in the morning like any other normal day.
Only long distance buses have not left terminals for destinations from Dhaka to other districts of the country during the hartal hours.
The fresh shutdown was announced less than a day after the 5-day hartal by the anti-government alliance passed off on Thursday.
