The BNP will stage a mass hunger strike at upazila, district and divisional headquarters on May 4 to protest what it said "fake and baseless" cases against the party high-ups including Chairperson Khaleda Zia and Vice Chairman Tarique Ragman.

The party will also hold agitation rallies across the country on April 28 for the same reason.

Announcing the programme at a press conference at the party headquarters at Nayapaltan this afternoon, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir strongly protested what he termed "abduction, enforced disappearance and extrajudicial killings" of the opposition workers.

The hunger strike on May 4 will begin at 9:00am and continue till 6:00pm, Fakhrul announced.

"Awami League has established an undeclared one-party rule in the country and, as a result, a medieval barbarism is going on," he alleged.

Fake and politically motivated cases are being lodged against BNP chairperson, her elder son Tarique Rahman and the party’s rank and file including standing committee members as part of the government’s plan to destroy BNP politics and democracy, he further alleged.

"We have to unite against this barbarism," he said, urging people from all walks of life to protest against the AL government.
