BNP-enforced hartal in Sunamganj passes off peacefully

Arrested Jubo Dal men sent to jail

BNP-enforced eight-hour hartal in Sunamganj, protesting abduction of Mujibur Rahman and his driver Rezaul Haque Sohel passed off peacefully yesterday.
Most of the business establishments in Sunamganj town remained closed while vehicles were off the roads during hartal hours.
Police dispersed a procession of the BNP activists soon after they took it out from the town's old bus stand area in the morning. They held a rally in the afternoon. There was no report of any untoward incident from anywhere in the district.
Sylhet district BNP also brought out a procession in the city yesterday afternoon, demanding immediate steps to rescue Mujibur Rahman and his driver. A rally was held at Chouhatta point with district BNP Convener Nurul Haque in the chair.
Ilias Mukti Sangram Parishad yesterday submitted a memorandum to the home minister through the deputy commissioner, demanding steps to rescue Mujibur.
Meanwhile, three Jubo Dal men, including Sunamganj district Jubo dal convening committee member Ali Akbar Chowdhury, arrested on Saturday in connection with the disappearance of BNP leader Mujibur Rahman and his driver Rezaul Haque Sohel, were sent to the jail yesterday.
Police produced them in the Judicial Magistrate's Court, seeking a five-day remand yesterday. The court sent the five to jail, pending hearing on the remand prayer, said Officer-in-Charge Zaney Alam Khan of Sunamganj Sadar Police Station.
Mujibur Rahman, adviser to BNP United Kingdom chapter and Sunamganj BNP convening committee member, and his driver Rezaul Haque Sohel disappeared on May 4 when they were going to Sylhet from Sunamganj.
