A Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight made an emergency landing at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport after one of the two engines of Boeing 777-200ER aircraft developed a problem around eight minutes after it took off from Chittagong for Dubai.
The flight BG 047 took off from Chittagong airport at 12:33am today. Approximately eight minutes into the flight, one of the engines experienced an in-flight surge with damage to the engine with a loud noise, causing panic among the passengers, Biman officials said.
The captain shut down the engine and asked the Air traffic Control Tower at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka to conduct an emergency landing.
“The aircraft landed safely with passengers disembarking the aircraft normally. An alternative aircraft was made available and took off from HSIA at 3:36am for Dubai,” said a Biman press release.
The 777 aircraft is equipped with two engines and is capable of flying safely with only one in operation. The aircraft, manufactured in 2001, will re-enter operational service once all necessary engine repairs have been completed, the release further said.
There had been no previous operational issues with the engine in question and it was also fully up to date with its routing maintenance checks, it added.
Of the 241 passengers on the original flight, 237 continued with their travel plans to Dubai, it added.
“For those few passengers choosing not to continue their journey, a full refund of their ticket will be given,” Biman Managing Director Kyle Heywood told The Daily Star.
He said, “We sincerely apologize to our customers onboard for any concern or inconvenience that this may have caused. The flight crew followed procedure in full and are well trained to handle such an isolated occurrence.”
