BGMEA, Unido join hands to improve garment productivity

Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association yesterday signed a deal with United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (Unido) to increase productivity and compliance in the apparel sector to meet international standards.
“We have gathered here to share our emerging potential in the garment industry through collaboration with Unido to enhance our abilities and improve productivity,” said Reaz-Bin-Mahmood, vice president of BGMEA.
He was speaking at a deal signing ceremony at BGMEA headquarters in Dhaka.      
“In this era of increasing competition, decreasing apparel prices and increasing production costs, it is essential we seek an avenue to explore and that can be achieved with productivity enhancements,” Mahmood said.
This agreement gives the platform to play a role to optimise productivity at BGMEA member factories and the industry as a whole, he added.
“This will balance out the extra costs of safety reforms and wage hikes and allow us to attain efficiency in other areas of the supply chain, like fabric optimisation, lean manufacturing and planning tools.”
“We are looking to explore a new horizon in productivity and capacity building through this agreement,” said John T Smith, international coordinator, Textile and Garment BEST (The Better Works and Standards Programme), Unido.
Smith said Unido is a partner for a prosperous garments sector.
