BCL men clash among themselves

In Gazipur city, activists demand release of the unit president held for violence

At least five students were injured in a factional clash of Bangladesh Chhatra League over establishing supremacy at Allama Kashgari hall of Dhaka Alia Madrasa in the capital yesterday.
The injured were treated in Dhaka Medical College Hospital and a local clinic.
The two factions of BCL activists with hockey sticks, cricket stumps and iron rods started fighting to take control over the hall around 2:30pm, said Sub-inspector Tarekul Islam of Chawk Bazar Police Station.
The clash stopped after police intervention, he said.
Sources said some activists led by Shaker, Shahadat Limon and Mohsin drove out the rivals loyal to the hall unit president Shafiqur Rahman and general secretary Latiful Bari Rakib from the dormitory one and a half months ago. Yesterday, BCL activists led by Shafiq and Rakib carried out the attack and drove out their opponents from the hall, they said.
Meanwhile, BCL's Gazipur city unit yesterday brought a procession and laid a siege to the deputy commissioner's office demanding release of the unit president, Masud Rana Ershad, and his associate who were arrested for their involvement in a clash on Monday that left 10 people injured.
Police dispersed the protesters after half an hour.
