A faction of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) Chittagong University unit demonstrated at campus this morning protesting the death of a fellow activist in a factional clash yesterday.

A group of BCL men, led by Suman Mamun, a joint secretary of the dissolved committee, put the main entrance under lock and key around 11:30am protesting the death.

They staged demonstration in front of the administration building around 12:50pm demanding removal of the proctor for “inaction to take legal steps against the killers.”

The vice-chancellor of the university was at his office during the demonstrations.

A Sanskrit department student, Taposh Paul, 20, was shot dead and at least four others were wounded in the clash between two groups of the campus unit BCL yesterday.

“Proctor favours the BCL group responsible for killing Taposh,” Suman Mamun alleged adding the “law enforcers were dillydallying to accept a case over the murder.”

Refuting the allegation, CU Proctor Siraj-ud-Daula told The Daily Star that the BCL men were bringing such claims to divert their internal feud.

The police were ready to accept a case filed from the family of the deceased, said Md Ismail, officer-in-charge of Hathazari Police Station, when contacted.

5 CU BCL ACTIVISTS, 60 OTHERS SUED

Police today sued five leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Chhatra League, ruling party’s student front, of Chittagong unit along with 60 anonymous others in an arms case.

The lawsuit was filed after lethal weapons – one shotgun, five cartridges, and 30 other weapons – were seized in last night’s crackdown in the campus’ Shah Amanat Hall following the death of a student in factional clash of the Chhatra League yesterday.

Habibur Rahman, a sub-inspector of Hathazari Police Station, lodged the case over illegal possession of firearms and sharp weapons, reports our Chittagong correspondent.

Among those named is Ashrafuzzaman Asha, cultural secretary of the dissolved Chhatra League unit of the university. The others are: Rubel Dey, Anis, Rashed and Abir. They are all followers of Varsity Group (VEx) with Rubel their leader.

Yesterday, a Sanskrit department student, Taposh Paul, 20, was shot dead and at least four others were wounded in a factional fight of the campus unit BCL.

Police yesterday, raided Shah Jalal and Shah Amanat dormitories and picked up 35 students for questioning into the incident. The weapons were seized then.
