BAU students demand death penalty for Saad killers
Academic and administrative activities came to a halt at Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) as students started an indefinite strike today, demanding immediate arrest and capital punishment to the killers of Saad Ibney Momtaj.
Saad, a final-year student of BAU fisheries faculty, died at a private clinic in Mymensingh town on April 1, a day after some activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League beat him up mercilessly at Ashraful Haque Hall on the campus.
Hundreds of students gathered in front of the administrative building around 8:30am and staged a one-hour sit-in there.
Later, they brought out a procession and held a rally on the campus.
From the rally, the agitators called upon the university authorities to expel all the “killers” from the university and ensure security of its students on the campus.
They also urged the authorities to put pressure on the government for taking steps to arrest the killers immediately and for holding their trial under the Speedy Trial Act.
The students also threatened to padlock academic and administrative buildings and the state-run banks on the campus tomorrow if the authorities do not take steps to fulfill their demands by today.
They have also been demanding the trial to be held under the Speedy Trial Tribunal Act.
The agitated students also padlocked the animal husbandry department of the university as students of the department were attending for a class.
No classes or examinations were held at the university since morning due to the strike.
Nine days in the murder, the BAU authorities expelled three students and suspended three others for their alleged involvement in the killing on the basis of a report submitted by the first investigation committee on April 8.
Rejecting the university authorities’ suspension order, the students have been continuing their agitation demanding expulsion of the three students, who were suspended for three months.
The university authorities on April 15 formed a five-member probe body for carrying out further investigation. The committee has been asked to submit its report within 21 working days.
