Bangladeshis set new world record
Over 2.5 lakh people sang the national anthem together in the capital on the Independence Day today in a bid to set a new world record.
Mostly in red and green, people from all walks of life gathered at National Parade Ground to be a part of the event 'Lakho Konthe Sonar Bangla'.
At 11:20am, 'Amar Shonar Bangla, Ami Tomay Bhalobashi' chorus by of 254,681 people reverberated through the area.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, accompanied by a large number of her cabinet colleagues, also sang in unison the national anthem.
The event is aimed at having Bangladesh's name in the Guinness Book of World Records.
Before today, the world record of greatest number of people to sing the same national or regional anthem at the same time belonged to Sahara India Pariwar (India) for May 6, 2013 event in Lucknow when 121,653 people sang India's national anthem.
The event was open to everyone above the age of 13.
Food, water and toilet were arranged at the venue.
Though the programme was scheduled to begin at 11:00am, people without any prior registration started to throng the venue from as early as 6:30am.
Prior to hold the programme, the prime minister addressed the gathering and called upon all to get imbued with the spirit of the Liberation War.
Bangladesh Television and private channels broadcast the programme live along with performances of eminent artistes of the country.
