Bangladeshi killed by BSF in Chapainawabganj border

A Bangladeshi youth was shot dead by Indian Border Security Force (BSF) at Telkupi frontier in Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj last night.

The deceased was identified as Mohammad Badsha (22), son of Mohammad Rafique of Telkupi village in the upazila, reports our Chapainawabganj correspondent.

Tozammel Haque, chairman of Shahbazpur Union Parishad, said BSF membersfrom Gopalnagar camp opened fire on Badsha when he along with some others went near the border around 11:30pm.

Badsha's body remained at the border for some time, he said.

BSF members took the body away from the spot around 9:30am today.

Lt Col Mahmudul Hasan, commanding officer of Rohonpur 59 BGB Battalion, said, "We heard sounds of two gunshots near the border last night."

"We confirmed that a dead body was in custody of Gopalnagar camp under Malda 24 BSF Battalion in West Bengal. But, it is not clear whose dead body it is. …. We are trying to contact BSF in this regard," he said.

STATEMENT OF BSF

BSF officials confirmed the incident, terming the victim a "smuggler".

The man was killed by a BSF team near Gopalnagar post of the border force in Malda district of West Bengal last evening when he was trying to smuggle bottles of Phensedyl, the officials claimed today, reports our New Delhi correspondent.

At least 75 bottles of Phensedyl have been seized from his possession, the officials said.
