Worker succumbs to injuries 5 days after Ctg shipbreaking yard explosion

One of the shipbreaking workers who suffered burn injuries in an explosion at Jamuna Shipbreakers in Chattogram's Sitakunda died today while undergoing treatment at Sheikh Hasina National Burn Institute in Dhaka.

The deceased was identified as Md Jihad (18), hailing from Sonaichori of Sitakunda upazila.

Dr Partha Sankar Paul, residential surgeon of Sheikh Hasina National Burn Institute told The Daily Star that Jihad succumbed to his injuries around 3:00pm.

On April 11, an explosion occurred at Jamuna Shipbreakers while cutting a coil pipe of a ship named MT Agros, a crude oil tanker, leaving three workers with burn injuries.

The injured workers were first admitted to Chatogram Medical College Hospital.

As their condition worsened, they were taken to Dhaka for better treatment where Jihad died today, said Abdullah Al Sakib Mubarrat, deputy inspector general of Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishment, Chattogram.
