Pabna University of Science and Technology (PUST) officers' association leaders locked the university's registrar office and halted administrative work this morning, reports our Pabna correspondent.

Bijon Kumar Brahma, registrar of PUST, told The Daily Star that the president of the officers' association, Harunur Rashid Don, and Secretary Sohag Hossain suddenly entered the registrar's office early today and forced them to leave the office.

"Officers' association leaders misbehaved with the chief engineer of the university last week, so the university authority formed a probe committee -- headed by Associate Professor Md Kamruzzaman -- to investigate the incident. They became angry with the registrar department after we issued the probe committee notice yesterday," Bijon said.

Harunur Rashid Don said, "We have submitted a memorandum with six-point demands including cancellation of appointment of the chief engineer, and address job discrimination. Without addressing our demands, the university authority formed a probe committee so the members of officers' association have locked the registrar's office."

Aminul Islam, chief engineer of PUST, said, "Officers' association leaders came to my office on June 15, misbehaved with me, and also asked me to leave the office. I didn't go to my office since then." he said.

"Somebody wants to get posting according to his choice, somebody wants to recruit his own people, and some wants to earn extra money. Personal interests are creating unrest at the university and putting pressure on the authority," an officer, seeking anonymity, said.

Professor Dr M Rustom Ali, vice-chancellor of PUST, however said, "The probe committee is investigating the recent incidents. After getting their report, we will take action."
