Public transport likely to resume after ongoing lockdown ends: Obaidul Quader

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader today said the government is actively considering resuming public transport services -- on condition of complying with the health rules -- after the ongoing lockdown ends on April 28.

"Many remain stuck in different areas as public transports are not operating during the ongoing lockdown. The government is actively considering resuming public transport after the lockdown," he said.

The minister was speaking at a virtual views-exchange meeting with the officials of Barishal Zone BRTC and BRTA from his residence in Dhaka.

"We have to be stricter in following health safety rules, even when the lockdown is relaxed for public transports," he said, urging all to wear masks and keep sanitiser in their vehicles. 

Quader, also general secretary of Awami League, said public transports have to keep 50 percent seats vacant and would be allowed to charge the re-fixed fare. Steps will be taken against those who charge extra fare.

 "The government has already decided to open markets and shops from Sunday as people suffer if strict lockdown persists for a long period. Eid is approaching and many feel the need for shopping," he said. 

"We have to learn how to live with coronavirus. Apart from fighting the virus, we have to face the challenges of development," he said.

Quader alleged that a political party was providing money and patronage for spreading false propaganda from home and abroad using social media.

He directed the concerned officials to keep BRTC and BRTA free from middlemen, and blacklist those contractors who delay in road construction.

He directed the concerned officials to take effective steps to upgrade the Faridpur-Bhanga-Barishal road to four lanes.
