Pick-up van driver dies after collision with car in Dhaka’s Banani

A pick-up van driver died and several others were injured after a private car hit the vehicle in Dhaka's Banani area early today.

The deceased was identified as Abdul Jalil Molla, hailing from Gazipur district.

At least 15 labourers from Mohakhali were heading towards the Airport area on the pick-up van when the accident occurred around 12:45am.

A private car -- being driven recklessly -- hit the pick-up van, leaving at least seven injured, said Abdur Razzak, an auto-rickshaw driver, who witnessed the incident.

Critically injured Jalil was rushed to Kurmitola General Hospital. As his condition deteriorated, he was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead, Razzak, who took Jalil to hospital, said.  

Nur-e-Azam Mia, officer-in-charge of Banani Police Station, said police seized the private car but its driver fled after the incident.

The body was sent to hospital morgue for autopsy, he said.
