Myanmar Navy releases 20 Bangladeshi fishermen after beating them up

Myanmar Navy released 20 Bangladeshi fishermen, who were detained by the force eight hours ago, after allegedly beating them up.

The fishermen were detained by Myanmar Navy when they were fishing in the Bay of Bengal near St Martin's Island on Wednesday morning, said Lt Col Md Foisal Hasan Khan, commanding officer of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Battalion-2 in Teknaf.

After getting released, the fishermen -- all from Shah Porir Dwip -- on Wednesday night, came back home, our Cox's Bazar correspondent reports quoting the BGB official.

The Myanmar Navy detained the fishermen for eight hours and beat them up without any valid reason, Nurul Amin, a local of Shah Porir Dwip said.

Earlier on November 10, Myanmar Navy captured nine fishermen with their trawler from Bay of Bengal.

Later, they were released on November 25 after a flag meeting with BGB.
