Morning rain leaves Dhaka streets waterlogged; showers to continue till Wednesday

Torrential rainfall today left several parts of Dhaka city in knee-deep to waist-deep water, disrupting public movement.

Talking to The Daily Star, Dr Abdul Mannan, a meteorologist of Bangladesh Met Department, said rainfall will continue till tomorrow and then the situation will improve slowly.

People, mainly office-goers, today faced difficulty during their commute due to the rain that led to waterlogging on many streets, lanes and by-lanes in the capital including in Banani, Green Road, Dhanmondi, Satmasjid Road, Mirpur Road, Tejturibazar, Mohakhali and Malibagh areas.

Many commuters had to pay extra fare to reach their destinations due to lack of public transport amid rain.

Many shops and houses in low-lying areas were submerged. Many were seen traveling on rickshaw-vans, getting no other way to reach office.

A number of vehicles were seen stalled on the road due to the waterlogging, which led to traffic congestion on Mirpur and Green Road, said our photojournalist Rashed Sumon who visited several parts of Dhaka.

Water started to recede after the rain stopped around 10:00am, he said.

According to a Met office forecast, commencing at 9:00am, light to moderate rain/thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty/squally wind were likely to occur at many places over Dhaka, Mymensingh, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions and at a few places over Rangpur and Rajshahi divisions with moderately heavy to heavy falls at places over the country.

It said trough of low lies over Bihar to Assam and across West Bengal in India, and Bangladesh while another trough of low extends from West Bengal to North Bay.
