A total of 1,61,807 students achieved GPA 5, the maximum grade point average, in Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and equivalent results for 2020, over 3 times more than that of the previous year.

The GPA 5 rate has risen to 11.83 percent in 2020 from 3.54 percent in the previous year, showed the results published this morning. The pass rate rose to 100 percent this year, as the results were prepared based on the results of JSC and SSC exams.

All of the 13,67,377 candidates have achieved pass marks.

Besides, a total of 17,043 students achieved GPA 5 in HSC and equivalent results of 2020 although they did not achieve GPA 5 in JSC and SSC exams.

On the other hand, a total of 396 students did not earn GPA 5 in 2020 though they had achieved that in JSC and SSC tests.

The results were prepared after coordinating 75 percent of the SSC and 25 percent of JSC-JDC results, said Education Minister Dipu Moni at a press conference on HSC results at International Mother Language Institute in Dhaka.

Dhaka Education Board chairman Nahel Ahmed and the board's senior system analyst Monjurul Kabir said that some of the students who had achieved GPA 5 with the help of fourth subject in JSC and SSC, didn't get the maximum grade point average in HSC because of that.

The HSC batch of 2020 is the first batch of students who are getting certificates without sitting for the exams as this is the first time in the history of the country that a public examination has been cancelled.

Usually, HSC exams take place in April-May, but it could not be held last year due to the pandemic. On March 17 last year, the government closed all schools to contain the spread of coronavirus. The closure was extended till February 14, 2021.

Earlier in the day, the education minister received the copy of the results from the board chairman on behalf of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The premier addressed the ceremony, joining virtually from her official residence Gono Bhaban this morning.

She said that HSC and equivalent results have been prepared following the international standard that the other countries exercised for their students.

She asked those criticising the results, in this new system, to refrain from unnecessary criticism. Useless discussions will only mount pressure on the students who are already facing mental stress due to the closure of educational institutions for a long time, she said.

"The negative comments would put psychological stress on the students, and I request you to stop making such comments," she said.
